High Speed Chase Suspect Formally Charged

According to an article by Big Country Home Page, a suspect who supposedly stole a Camaro from a car dealership in Abilene and led police on a high-speed chase was arrested on Monday, November 13th. The man has been formally charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle, Aggravate Assault of a Public Servant and Evading Arrest with a Vehicle. Authorities are holding the suspect, Micheal Howard, in the Taylor County Jail on bonds that total $110,000.

Howard had stolen the Camaro from Star Dodge and ditched the vehicle in the 2500 block of Minter Lane where he tried to escape on foot. During the chase, however, Howard hit a Taylor County Sheriff’s vehicle and came close to hitting several other witnesses to the whole ordeal. Police were able to catch Howard around 5 in the afternoon. Arresting officers found a gun and magazine on Howard’s person when he was taken into custody.

High-Speed Chases

People who flee from the police in a vehicle endanger so many people other than themselves. Innocent people who are just minding their own business can be seriously hurt by the actions of a careless person. The chase puts the lives of the officer, the suspect, any possible passengers, and other people on the road in danger. Since so many people who really have nothing to do with the chase are put at risk, some people have become quite vocal in opposition to police chases for minor offenses. For instance, they don’t think a person should be chased for running a stop sign. On the other hand, police officers feel like this undermines their authorities and that if a person is fleeing, they are running for a reason. No matter what the reason for a chase, it seems the real losers in the whole thing are the people who were just driving along minding their own business who are hit by a criminal.
