Abilene Pedestrian Killed in Auto Accident

Big Country News reported on September 12, 2018, that a man from Abilene, Texas was struck by a vehicle in South Abilene in the early afternoon. Unfortunately, the man died from the injuries he sustained in the accident. This accident occurred near the 4100 block area of Southwest Drive. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and transported the 54-year-old victim to Abilene regional medical center where he died from his injuries. Police stated that the driver of the car that struck the man was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. At this point, it is unclear if the driver was speeding or not. No other injuries were reported at the scene of the accident. Due to the severity of the pedestrian accident, traffic along Southwest Drive was slowed.

The Danger to Pedestrians

A certain amount of danger can come with walking down a busy street. In Abilene, however, pedestrian traffic is minimal most of the time. So, when a story like this one happens, it can be very shocking. Sadly, the person lost his life in the accident, and the reason why the vehicle struck him is unclear.  Sometimes pedestrians disobey laws that are in place for their protection and suffer severe consequences. Other times, people who are walking are injured or killed through no fault of their own.

As a pedestrian, there are various things you can do to keep yourself safer while walking. Staying off of busy roads and walking on sidewalks, as well as crossing streets at designated crosswalks can help you to avoid an accident. If there is no sidewalk, experts recommend that you walk facing traffic as far from the travel lane as possible.  If no crosswalk is available, cross at an intersection. There are several safety tips for pedestrians to take into consideration and being defensive and alert while walking may help you to avoid an accident.
